How to Clean Sweat and Oils from Your Cat's Favorite Fabric Beds

Cats may look perfectly tidy, but their favorite fabric beds can collect body oils, fur, dust, dander, and warm-weather odors over time. During summer, bedding can feel less fresh faster, especially if your cat naps in the same cozy spot every day. A simple cleaning routine can help keep your cat’s bed comfortable, hygienic, and inviting.

Start by checking the care label. Some cat beds have removable covers that can be machine washed, while others need spot cleaning. Following the manufacturer’s instructions helps protect the fabric, filling, and shape of the bed.

Before washing, remove loose fur. Use a lint roller, pet hair remover, grooming glove, or handheld vacuum to lift hair from the surface. Removing fur first helps the wash work better and prevents clumps from collecting in the machine.

For washable covers, use a gentle, pet-safe detergent without strong fragrance. Cats have sensitive noses, and heavily scented laundry products may make them avoid the bed after cleaning. A mild detergent is usually the best choice for maintaining comfort.

Warm water may help remove oils, but avoid high heat unless the care label allows it. Hot water or high dryer settings can shrink fabric, damage padding, or change the texture of the bed. Air drying is often a safer option for preserving softness and shape.

For spot cleaning, blot the area with a damp cloth and mild cleaning solution suitable for pet items. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or strong essential oils, as these can be unsafe or irritating for cats. Let the bed dry fully before returning it to your cat.

Baking soda can help with odor control when used carefully. Sprinkle a small amount on the dry bed, let it sit briefly, then vacuum thoroughly before your cat uses it again. Never leave loose powder behind where your cat may inhale or lick it.

If the bed has a removable insert, check whether the insert can be washed or only aired out. Some foam or cushion inserts should not be soaked. In those cases, clean the cover, wipe the insert if allowed, and let everything dry completely.

Summer bedding should be cleaned more often if your cat sheds heavily, has oily fur, spends time near windows, or uses cooling mats and beds daily. Rotating between two beds or covers can make cleaning easier without taking away your cat’s favorite resting spot.

To keep the bed fresher between washes, place it in a shaded, well-ventilated area and brush your cat regularly. Grooming reduces loose fur and helps keep bedding cleaner for longer.

At Mewment, we believe your cat’s favorite nap spot should feel as fresh as it is cozy. With gentle washing, fragrance-free products, regular fur removal, and breathable summer bedding, you can keep your feline’s bed clean, soft, and ready for every peaceful purr.
