How to Deep Clean Your Cat's Soft Toys Without Destroying Them
Share
Our cats’ favorite plush toys go through a lot: they are bitten, kicked, carried in mouths, and dragged through dust bunnies. Over time, these toys accumulate a buildup of dried saliva, bacteria, and allergens. While hygiene is crucial, many cat parents are afraid to wash soft toys for fear of ruining the internal squeakers, the texture, or the scent that their cat loves.
At Mewment, we believe that a clean toy is a safe toy. Here is your guide to deep-cleaning cat plushes without losing the "magic."
1. The Mesh Bag Technique
Never throw loose toys directly into the washing machine. The agitation can rip delicate seams or destroy feather attachments. Place all soft toys in a mesh laundry bag. This provides a protective barrier while still allowing water and detergent to penetrate the fabric.
2. Choosing a Cat-Safe Detergent
Cats have a sense of smell 14 times stronger than ours. Standard laundry detergents are filled with synthetic fragrances and optical brighteners that can irritate a cat’s respiratory system or skin. Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and dye-free detergent. Alternatively, a small amount of baking soda and white vinegar in the rinse cycle acts as a natural sanitizer and odor neutralizer.
3. The "Cold and Gentle" Rule
Heat is the primary cause of toy damage. High temperatures can melt synthetic fur fibers or warp internal plastic parts. Always use the "Cold" and "Delicate" settings. This ensures the toys get clean without losing their structural integrity or soft texture.
4. Air Drying is Best
While it’s tempting to toss them in the dryer, the high heat of a drying cycle is often too much for cat toys. Instead, squeeze out excess water by rolling them in a clean towel, then reshape them and let them air dry in a well-ventilated area. If you must use a dryer, use the "No Heat" or "Air Fluff" setting.
