How to Help Your Cat Stay Active During the Summer Heat

How to Help Your Cat Stay Active During the Summer Heat

As the summer sun heats up your home, you might notice your cat becoming a bit of a "rug ornament." While it’s natural for cats to conserve energy when it's hot, a total lack of movement can lead to weight gain and lethargy. The challenge for the modern cat parent is finding ways to encourage play without causing your cat to overheat.

At Mewment, we believe in seasonal wellness. Here is how to keep your cat active and healthy through the warmest months of the year.

1. Shift to "Twilight Play"

In the wild, cats are naturally most active at dawn and dusk—the coolest parts of the day. In the summer, move your primary play sessions to the early morning or late evening. Avoid high-intensity jumping during the heat of the afternoon. A gentle 10-minute session before bed is much safer and more effective than a long session at noon.

2. Introduce "Water Play"

While not all cats love a bath, many are fascinated by water.

  • Ice Cube Hockey: Toss a few ice cubes on a hard floor. Your cat will love batting them around, and the melting water provides a cooling sensation for their paws.

  • The "Floating" Hunt: Place a few lightweight plastic toys in a shallow tray of cool water. Encouraging your cat to "fish" for their toys is a great way to engage them mentally and physically while keeping them hydrated and cool.

3. Low-Energy "Brain Games"

If it’s too hot for running, focus on mental exercise. Use puzzle feeders or licking mats spread with refrigerated Mewment puree treats. "Working" for their food keeps their brain active and burns calories through concentration, all while they remain in a cool, stationary position.

4. Optimize the "Cooling" Landscape

Ensure your cat has access to the coolest parts of the house—usually tiled floors or shaded corners. Place a Mewment cooling mat in their favorite play area. If they have a comfortable "base camp" that is cool, they are more likely to engage in short bursts of spontaneous play.

The Mewment Cool Summer

At Mewment, we celebrate the adaptive nature of cats. Staying active in summer is about quality over quantity. By timing your play and using cooling "hacks," you ensure your cat stays fit and happy all season long. Because at Mewment, every "meow" counts—even the summer ones.
