Why Your Cat May Prefer Freshly Washed Bedding in Humid Weather
If your cat seems especially drawn to freshly washed bedding during humid weather, there is a good reason. Cats are sensitive to scent, texture, moisture, and temperature. When summer humidity makes fabrics feel heavier or less fresh, clean bedding can become much more appealing.
Humidity can make cat beds, blankets, mats, and fabric loungers hold odors more easily. Even if bedding looks clean, it may collect body oils, loose fur, dust, dander, and moisture from the air. Your cat’s sensitive nose may notice these changes before you do.
Freshly washed bedding often feels lighter and cleaner against your cat’s coat. During warm weather, cats may avoid bedding that feels damp, stale, or overly warm. A newly washed cover or lightweight blanket can make their resting spot feel more comfortable again.
Scent also matters. Cats prefer familiar smells, but not necessarily strong or stale ones. Clean bedding that still carries a gentle home scent can feel safe without feeling overwhelming. Avoid heavily scented detergents, fabric softeners, or dryer sheets, as strong fragrance may bother your cat.
Texture can change in humid weather too. Plush bedding may feel thicker, warmer, or slightly sticky when the air is damp. Smooth cotton-blend covers, bamboo-style fabrics, lightweight microfiber, and breathable woven materials can feel fresher during summer.
To support your cat, wash bedding regularly during humid months. Cat bed covers, lightweight blankets, hammock liners, and favorite mats may need more frequent cleaning in July and August than they do in cooler seasons.
Drying is just as important as washing. Make sure bedding is completely dry before returning it to your cat’s resting area. Damp fabric can feel uncomfortable and may develop odor quickly in humid rooms.
Having extra washable covers can make summer care easier. When one cover is being washed, another can stay on the bed so your cat does not lose their favorite resting place.
Placement also helps bedding stay fresh. Keep beds away from direct sunlight, damp corners, laundry rooms, and areas with poor airflow. A shaded room with gentle ventilation is usually more comfortable.
At Mewment, we believe clean comfort is part of everyday cat care. When your cat prefers freshly washed bedding in humid weather, they may simply be choosing a cooler, softer, and fresher place to rest through the summer.
